The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is a vivid fictional novel that allows the readers to feel like they're a part of the story as he describes the many events that are happening in Oscar's life throughout the years. The first chapter of Diaz's novel set a very appealing tone toward Oscar, this being because of the fact that it was his so called "Golden Age" where he had his way with everything, especially the ladies. He described this being as  the "Days where he was (still) a "normal" Dominican boy..." (11) We can see the meaning of the work just as the story begins to shift in tone. Oscar, in particular, found himself losing his ways and gaining more and more weight as his depression strikes. "He walked into school everyday like the fat lonely nerdy kid he was..." (19) As the story continues on, Oscar is able to see that his life will never be the same, that he will never be able to find love especially because of his interests and unappealing physique. As he keeps going on with his life he meets who he thought was the girl of his dreams, Ana. Ana, being the naïve girl she was, never gave any though to how Oscar looked or what he liked. The closer they got, the more Oscar found himself falling for her. "...his heart thudded inside his chest..." (36). Just as he thought he was falling more in love with her he finds out the devastating news that she is now back with her drug-addict ex boyfriend.
